Hi, I’m Emily a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) at Thriving Families Counselling. For more than 6 years I have worked with kids, teens and families, helping them to build and maintain healthy relationships, manage life’s stressors and foster individual and family growth and wellness.
Having worked in residential and community mental health programs, I have witnessed the depth of stressors affecting kids and teens today, creating anxiety, depression and low self esteem. One of the primary reasons I became a Psychotherapist was to help kids and families understand themselves and each other in new and compassionate ways. In my work, I love using my Rec and Leisure background as well as my natural creativity to design games and activities that help kids and teens in individual therapy who may be quieter, or initially have difficulty expressing themselves, to find their voices and to see themselves more positively. In family therapy, helping families to find new ways of communicating and of listening to each other compliments the hard work being completed in individual sessions.
In addition to my work with kids and teens, as a mom of a young child myself, I have a special interest in supporting new parents in navigating this new identity, the stress of having multiple roles (parent, partner, daughter/son, sister/brother, friend) and the challenges of navigating how we want to parent vs how we were parented.
I believe that a supportive and trusting relationship is the foundation for effective therapy and therefore always work from a relationship-based, trauma and attachment framework with every client I meet. I pride myself on being genuine, warm and ensuring every client feels safe in therapy. I look forward to hearing from you, and working together.
